Contrasting Studies In Acrylic Fields of Color

Growing up on the plains, I was surrounded by vast spaces filled with miles of grasses and flowers blending together in every direction I turned. In my mind, these pieces are reminiscent of that world and the broad patternings that defined it.

I suppose that’s why I have an affinity for color-field paintings.

By that, on the one hand, I’m referring to homogenous hues like the red, yellow, and blue of the Primary-Conflict Triptych. (That’s an idea that becomes interesting in a different way when we get to the monochromatic section a little later on this site; one featuring black and white and mid-tone variations).

On the other hand, I’m also extending the color-field concept beyond homogenous hues to include variegated patterns as well; a kind of commingling of colors that because a subject matter in itself, without any objects depicted.
